CHP: Jaguar driver speeding before fatal Highway 1 crash

A man killed in a Monday night crash on Highway 1 was an out-of-state driver who had been speeding in a sports car just before he lost control and smashed into a tree, the CHP said Tuesday.

The 2000 Jaguar burst into flames with the man still inside, CHP Officer Kerri Post said.

The Sonoma County Coroner's Office declined to release the man's name Tuesday morning, saying he hadn't been positively identified.

The crash occurred near Vantage Road at about 8:45 p.m. as he drove south in The Sea Ranch community.

CHP investigators said he'd been driving too fast for the curving, two-lane highway, Post said.

He missed a curve and the Jaguar crossed the northbound lane, ran off the road and hit a dirt embankment and the tree.

The man was alone in the car.

The CHP and firefighters closed the highway until late Monday night, diverting traffic through a nearby neighborhood.

An autopsy was expected to be conducted today.
