Driver runs from west Santa Rosa traffic stop

The Sonoma County Sheriff's helicopter circled above west Santa Rosa Thursday to help officers on the ground search for a motorist who ran away from a CHP officer during a traffic stop.

Officers later learned the man had warrants out for his arrest. He remained at large late Thursday, CHP Officer Jon Sloat said.

A CHP officer tried to pull over a 2005 Nissan sedan with a missing tail light at 4:18 p.m. near Sebastopol and Dutton avenues, but the driver didn't stop, Sloat said.

The officer called for backup and was joined by sheriff's deputies and Santa Rosa police officers, including police dogs and the helicopter team.

The chase became a foot pursuit moments later when the driver stopped about two blocks away on Corby Avenue, got out of the car and ran, Sloat said. He headed west, running through backyards and evading capture.

Officers flooded the neighborhood but did not find the man, then went to the home of the Nissan's registered owner.

The driver, a man who appeared to be in his 20s wearing a dark blue shirt and jeans, was still at large at 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

No more details were available.
