Santa Rosa man hit by car in west Sonoma County has head injury, fractures

A 57-year-old Santa Rosa man who was struck and injured Thursday evening while walking on darkened Occidental Road survived the night and was expected to survive after surgery, the CHP said Friday.

Pal Singh, originally from India, sustained head and internal injuries and multiple broken bones in the 5:40 p.m. crash near Irwin Lane, the CHP said.

The driver, 21-year-old Anthony Eich of Sebastopol, told authorities Singh was three or four feet into the road when he suddenly appeared in the headlights of Eich's van, the CHP said.

It was not clear how long Singh had been in the country or whether he was familiar with the area or local traffic laws.

He lost consciousness at the scene and had no identification but regained consciousness long enough to provide his name at one point, officers said.

At about the same time, family members who were worried about Singh's whereabouts came looking for him and confirmed his identification, the CHP said.

Singh was flown to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa for treatment of major injuries. Family members were with him there on Friday, authorities said.

Because of a communication mix-up with the hospital early Friday morning, a different name was given to the CHP and published incorrectly on The Press Democrat's web site on Friday morning.
