Supervisor Zane, challenger Smith face off at Rohnert Park forum

Supervisor Shirlee Zane and challenger Tim Smith square off Wednesday night in Rohnert Park for their first candidate forum ahead of the June primary.

The League Of Women Voters event takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Rohnert Park City Hall, 130 Avram Ave.

Zane, 52, is considered a powerful incumbent. She currently serves as chairwoman of the board, has significant campaign contributions and a raft of endorsements from across the political spectrum.

Smith, 57, is a former Rohnert Park city councilman who ran unsuccessfully for the 3rd District supervisor's seat in 2008, placing third in a June primary behind former Santa Rosa Councilwoman Sharon Wright and Zane, who went on to claim the seat in November.

The former insurance attorney acknowledges his low-budget campaign faces challenges, but says he wants to give voters a choice. He's campaigning as a more fiscally responsible candidate who would do more to control county pension costs.

A second forum is scheduled for the Flamingo Resort & Hotel in Santa Rosa on Wednesday May 9.
