Crews continue spill cleanup after Highway 1 tanker crash

Cleanup was expected to continue Wednesday along Highway 1 in Salt Point State Park from a Tuesday afternoon tanker truck crash involving spilled motor oil, reported the CHP.

Driver Douglas Heskett, 64, of Napa lost control of the tanker truck as he drove south on the coast highway in the rain at about 2:30 p.m, reported CHP Officer Kerri Post.

Near Kruse Ranch Road Heskett ran off the highway and hit several trees. The tank became dislodged and a broken valve caused about 300 gallons to spill, Post said.

The Evergreen Environmental Services truck spilled used oil and other recycled auto fluids, including antifreeze onto the roadway and dirt on the shoulders.

Heskett had minor injuries. He was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

One lane remained closed until about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday during clean up efforts.

Crews were due to return to the crash site Wednesday to finish the job and traffic would again be funneled to one lane, said Post.
