Clearlake dirt biker says crash into officer an accident

A 21-year-old Clearlake man remained in custody Friday on suspicion of hitting a police officer with an off-road dirt bike, Clearlake police said.

The incident occurred at Galaxy Resort on Old Highway 53 at 8:55 p.m., Sgt. Dominic Ramirez said.

A man on a dirt bike, later identified as Joseph Maggio, approached Officer Travis Lenz, who was standing beside a patrol car, Ramirez said.

Lenz apparently was at the resort to investigate a different matter.

Maggio biked toward the officer at a slow speed then allegedly sped up and struck the officer's leg, Ramirez said.

Lenz grabbed the biker's arm and apprehended him and during a search found suspected methamphetamine in Maggio's possession, Ramirez said.

Maggio said he accidentally hit the officer as he tried to get away, according to police.

Neither man was injured, Ramirez said.

Maggio was being held on $50,000 bail on suspicion of possessing a controlled substance, assault with a deadly weapon on an officer and felony resisting arrest, Lake County jail records show.
