Coast Guard rescues five aboard boat stranded off Stewarts Point

Coast Guard crews Tuesday rescued five people aboard a boat stranded off Stewarts Point on the Sonoma Coast, authorities said.

An 18-foot vessel lost power about a half mile off shore, and a person aboard was able to use a cellphone to call for help at 10 a.m., said Matt Foussadier, boatswain's mate with the Coast Guard at Bodega Bay.

A Coast Guard helicopter was sent to find the boat and dropped radio gear to the stranded people as a 47-foot rescue boat headed to the area from Bodega Bay.

Three adults and two children, ages 7 and 10, were aboard "safe and anchored," Foussadier said.

It was expected to take five hours to tow the boat about 25 nautical miles in choppy seas back to Bodega Bay, Ross Ellis, boatswain's mate second class, said.

They were expected to arrive at about 7 p.m.
