Gun fatality identified as Windsor man

The man who died Friday in an apparently accidental shooting was identified Saturday as Richard Leon Pinckard Jr. of Windsor, a Sonoma County Coroner's detective said Saturday.

Pinckard, 44, was staying with friends at a house on rural Silk Road, west of the Charles M. Schulz-Sonoma County Airport, investigators said.

He was alone in a room when he apparently mishandled a 9mm semiautomatic handgun and fired a single round into his lower abdomen shortly before 11:30 a.m.

Friends were transporting Pinckard to a hospital when sheriff's deputies intercepted them and moved him into an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

The handgun was recovered by deputies.
