Sonoma cyclist struck, killed by big rig

Napa CHP officials Tuesday identified a Sonoma cyclist killed when he rode in the path of a big rig as Brian Laurie, 68.

Laurie was struck at about 4:40 p.m. Thursday on Eighth Street East south of Denmark Road, CHP Officer Jake Ramos said.

Laurie was riding in the right-most part of the southbound lane when he began to make a left-hand turn, signalling with his left arm and pedaling into the path of the truck, Ramos said.

Driver Carlos Linarez, 46, of Vallejo applied the brakes on the 1998 International truck and turned to the left when he saw Laurie signal the turn, but he struck the cyclist, Ramos said.

Sonoma County paramedics took Laurie to Queen of the Valley Hospital in Napa, where he was pronounced dead.
