Sonoma beer entrepreneur Dean Biersch, who co-founded Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants, has announced plans to open one of his popular Hopmonk Taverns in Marin County.

The tavern, which will feature a 175-seat concert space, will open this fall in Novato in the Vintage Oaks Shopping Center.

Biersch opened the first Hopmonk in Sebastopol in 2008 and a second tavern in Sonoma two years later.

"In a challenging market, both my Sebastopol and Sonoma businesses are doing very, very well right now, I'm happy to say," he told the Marin Independent Journal. "This is kind of a natural progression."

In 1987, Biersch teamed with brewing engineer Dan Gordon to open their first Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant in Palo Alto. In 1999, the restaurants were sold to what ultimately became CraftWorks Restaurants and Breweries.

There are now more than 30 Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurants in the United States and Taiwan.
