Sheriff's officials: Rohnert Park teen used fake cards for luxury car, vacation rental

A 19-year-old Rohnert Park man was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of driving a stolen $240,000 sports car, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff's office.

Deputies said Mohannad Halaweh, 19, a former star basketball player at Analy High School, was behind the wheel of an orange 2012 McLaren when he was stopped by deputies at about 6:45 p.m. Wednesday night on Dutton Avenue in Santa Rosa.

Detectives said Halaweh had used stolen credit cards to rent the McLaren for $13,000 from a company in San Jose, and a $12 million vacation home in Glen Ellen for $27,000.

Halaweh was taken to the Sonoma County jail, where he was booked on suspicion of possession of stolen property and credit card fraud charges. His bail was set at $100,000.

Halaweh's passenger, Nhimia Kahsay, 19, of Santa Rosa, was cited and released. Deputies said there may be additional charges related to this investigation filed against Kahsay.

Halaweh was reportedly on his way back from a court date for a previous brush with the law when he was arrested Wednesday.

In March, he was arrested in Berkeley on suspicion of using a fake credit card to try to purchase $10,000 of merchandise at an Apple Store.
