Marine Mammal Center reaches milestone

SAUSALITO — The Sausalito-based Marine Mammal Center is celebrating a milestone: the rescue and rehabilitation of its 10,000th and 10,001st sea lions.

The sea lions nicknamed Milestone and Zodiac Girl will be released into the ocean on a deserted Marin County beach on Thursday. They were found suffering from a potentially fatal bacterial infection along the shoreline in the Santa Cruz area in mid-July.

Veterinarians kept them in saltwater pens and gave them antibiotics and now say there are no signs of the infection in their blood.

In all, the San Francisco Chronicle reports (http://bit.ly/oORxIU) that the nonprofit Marine Mammal Center has saved 16,000 mammals since it was established in 1975, including sea lions, elephant seals, sea otters and whales.
