3 sea lions nursed to help at Sausalito center and sent back to sea

SAUSALITO — Three sea lions are back in the wild after recuperating from illness at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito.

Leopico, Cranberry Sauce and Teahupoo all snorted with relief and flopped out of their cages on Rodeo Beach as they slid into the surf on Tuesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. (http://bit.ly/vFz9PA )

Jim Oswald, a spokesman for the center, says the three were found suffering near Moss Landing in Monterey. Two had a bacterial infection that can lead to kidney problems and the other was malnourished.

The three were nursed back to health over the last month. They will be tagged but not tracked.

The Marine Mammal Center has treated 530 sick or injured marine mammals so far this year. About 50 percent are successfully rehabilitated and returned to the wild.
