San Quentin inmate pleads guilty in prison slaying

NOVATO — A San Quentin inmate has pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing another inmate who was serving time for striking and killing a 9-year-old girl with his motorcycle.

Frank Souza entered the plea to first-degree murder with special circumstances on Thursday.

The Marin Independent Journal reports (http://bit.ly/zAzwqk) that prosecutors agreed not to pursue the death penalty against Souza in exchange for his plea.

Souza was accused of stabbing 44-year-old Edward Schaefer seven times in a prison yard on July 26, 2010. The 33-year-old Souza was serving time on a murder conviction.

Schaefer had just begun serving his sentence after he was convicted of killing Melody Osheroff and maiming her father, Aaron, in 2009 with his motorcycle while intoxicated.
