SUNNYVALE — Three San Francisco Bay Area schools are being taken out of lockdown mode because police now think a student who reported seeing an armed man was lying.
The city of Sunnyvale said Friday that authorities had stopped searching for a possible suspect after two hours because new information suggested the information that prompted the search had been fabricated.
Three Sunnyvale schools — West Valley Elementary School, Cupertino Middle School and Homestead High School were put on lockdown following the student's report of spotting a man with a revolver near the middle school.
Students were required to stay inside the elementary and high school as a precaution.
Schools around the nation have been taking extra precautions to safeguard students since 20 elementary schoolers were shot to death in Newtown, Conn. last month.
