UCSC police say woman admits making up rape story

SANTA CRUZ — University of California, Santa Cruz police say a woman who reported being raped on campus made up the assault story.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel reports (http://bit.ly/VQmIta) the 21-year-old woman, who was visiting the UC campus, told police investigators that she staged the Feb. 17 attack.

University Police Chief Nader Oweis says the matter has been forwarded to the Santa Cruz District Attorney's Office for possible prosecution. The unidentified woman could face criminal charges for submitting a false report.

The woman originally told police she was attacked while walking along a wooded path between the Upper Quarry Amphitheater and the Classroom Unit buildings. She claimed she was struck in the head and torso by the alleged attacker.

The university rescinded a $5,000 reward it had offered for information about the suspect.
