Possibly poisoned meatballs being dropped around San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco police are trying to determine what was put into cooked meatballs that appear to have been purposely scattered on the ground, sickening at least one dog.

Police said on Friday that they had sent samples from the meatballs to a laboratory and were awaiting results. Investigators suspect they were poisoned.

About 50 cooked meatballs were found scattered in the city's Twin Peaks and Diamond Heights neighborhoods this week. Police spokesman Albie Esparza said one dog got sick and was taken to a veterinarian.

Veterinary neurologist Carrie Jurney is treating the 7-year-old dachshund named Oskar. She says his symptoms are consistent with strychnine poisoning. The dog remains in critical condition but is expected to recover.

The veterinary center, Animal Internal Medicine & Specialty Services in San Francisco, is seeking donations for Oskar's care through its Facebook page.
