Mendocino Film Fest launches Seabiscuit film series

The festival will launch the inaugural Seabiscuit Legacy Film Series on May 31 at the Ridgewood Ranch in Willits, where Seabiscuit lived out his final years.|

Marking the 75th anniversary of racehorse Seabiscuit’s historic win at Santa Anita, the Mendocino Film Festival will launch the inaugural Seabiscuit Legacy Film Series on May 31 at the Ridgewood Ranch in Willits, where Seabiscuit lived out his final years.

The program, supported by the Seabiscuit Heritage Foundation and best-selling author Laura Hillenbrand, features a guided tour of Ridgewood Ranch at 10 a.m., followed at noon by a screening of three, short films: “The Making of a Legend: Seabiscuit’s 1940 Victory at Santa Anita Park,” “Ridgewood Ranch: The Home of Seabiscuit,” and “Riding My Way Back,” about one soldier’s journey back from the brink of suicide after connecting with a horse.

A 1940s-themed reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the historic Howard House at Ridgewood Ranch, featuring live music and classic cars. The program continues at 4 p.m. at Noyo Theatre in Willits with a screening of “Harry and Snowman,” the story of an international show jumping legend (Harry deLeyer) and the horse that launched his career (Snowman).

Tickets are $40 for the ranch tour and reception. Film tickets are $11 in advance, $12 at the door. A portion of the proceeds benefit Ridgewood T.R.A.I.L., a therapeutic riding program that serves veterans. mendocinofilmfestival.org or 937-0171.
