Cuban singer, songwriter and guiarist Carlos Varela will perform at 7:30 p.m. July 25 in Weill Hall at the Green Music Center in Rohnert Park.

Varela first gained fame in the 1980s, when he joined the Nueva Trova movement, a political and poetic musical genre originally stemming from the 1959 Cuban Revolution and emerging in the late ‘60s.

Varela’s work has exerted an influence on both music and film in the United States. Jackson Browne translated Varela’s song “Walls and Doors” into English for Browne’s 2014 “Standing in the Breach” recording and tour. Varela’s song “Una Palabra” was on the soundrack of the 2001 film “Power Keg” and the 2004 movie “Man on Fire.”

The concert will benefit Californians Building Briges, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting cultural, humanitarian and entrepreneurial exchanges between the people of Cuba and California. For more information about Californians Building Bridges, visit cabuildingbridges.org online.

The concert tickets range in price from $35 to $75, and are available online at gmc.sonoma.edu, or by phone 866-955-6040.
