Where can you set off fireworks in Sonoma County, and which ones should you go for?

Share your favorite fireworks memories, and find out where it’s still legal to light them in Sonoma County.|

Do you have a favorite firework?

Is it a massive aerial pyrotechnic shot off over one of Sonoma County’s cities, or something you grew up lighting off in your driveway?

Were they the hand-held sparklers that you waved around and around while trying to avoid getting a spark on your hand? Was it the purplish fountain of sparks known as Purple Rain? Or the white hot spouting, crackly fountain called Mad Dog?

Perhaps you think it’s time to ban fireworks for personal use altogether.

Though illegal in most of Sonoma County, so-called “safe and sane” fireworks that do not take flight are still sold in Sebastopol, Rohnert Park, Petaluma and Cloverdale. Each city has its own restrictions on when and where fireworks can be lit. For a summary of rules around the county, click here.

For those who plan to light fireworks responsibly, this year’s new offerings promise colorful fountains, some that crackle and sparkle.

Fiery Scorpion goes for $24.99 and the Zombie Apocalypse for $21.99. Both are touted to be colorful fountain fireworks. Neon Galaxy claims to offer crackly, glittery, sparkling color for $21.99.

Other perennial favorites according to fireworks sellers include the Luck of the Irish, for $9.99. It sets off a fountain that shoots green sparks and has some green smoke. Pop-Its are the cheapest thing you can find in a booth, at 99 cents for 50. You toss the little fireworks down onto the ground for a quick popping sound.

You can still do the hand-held waving thing with Morning Glory sparklers, which come in a package for $9.99.
