Hoda Kotb adopts a baby girl to the surprise of most of her 'Today' colleagues

Hoda Kotb announced the new addition to her family Tuesday much to the surprise of many of her 'Today' show colleagues.|

Hoda Kotb, who was understandably missing from the "Today" show on Tuesday morning, called in to break some news with a photo of herself holding the week-old Haley Joy.

"You have a new hairdo," joked Matt Lauer, who along with Kathie Lee Gifford were the only "Today" show personalities privy to the news before Kotb's reveal. Jenna Bush Hager, Carson Daly, Al Roker and Bryant Gumbel were all shocked - most to tears.

"That little girl, Haley Joy," said Kotb, her voice clearly breaking, "is my daughter. I adopted her."

Later Kotb, who co-hosts the fourth hour of "Today" with Gifford, called in to that program to gush more about the addition to her family.

"Can you believe? I have a daughter," she said.

"I didn't know that my heart can feel like this," she added. "With all the love I've ever had in my life, and I've had the best love . . . I never ever imagined that I could feel this kind of . . . it's like a warm hand on my heart."

Then Gifford started crying again.
