Nightbeats: Foxygen in Sonoma, Sheila E. in Napa

Hello San Francisco, or well…Sonoma - Hear old, soulful tunes meet modern glitzy-glamour, as Los Angeles band Foxygen makes a surprise, must-see stop at Gundlach Bundschu Winery this month.

If you’re not familiar, Foxygen creates its trademark modern sound using psychedelic notes infused with elements of pop, indie rock and a little blues, if you squint a little. The Duo, consisting of Sam France and Jonathan Rado, have released four studio albums since 2007. In a world full of overproduced music and overdone auto-tune, it’s refreshing to hear the group’s newest record “Hang,” which sees the band nixing all computer and recording on 2-inch tape.

The impressive album features a more-than-40-piece symphony orchestra on every track and guest appearances from Steven Drozd of the Flaming Lips as well as Brian D’Addario and Michael D’Addario of the Lemon Twigs. The duo hits the road this fall in support of this self-produced album and hence the stop at Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma.

If you’ve attended a concert at Gundlach Bundschu Winery, you might be used to the winery’s outdoor amphitheater, which features outdoor seating on a gorgeous, grassy hill in a perfect spot to watch the sunset.

This show will feature a more rustic vibe and be held in The Old Redwood, which houses the winery’s trucks and tractors by day but offers a sweet spot to catch live music by night.

Tip: If you haven’t heard Foxygen before, good tracks to check out are “Follow The Leader,” a saucy danceable number and “San Francisco,” a modern love song set in the Bay Area with lyrics such as “I left my love in San Francisco. That’s ok, I was bored anyway.”

Party on railroad, party on - Remember when I complained about saying goodbye to the Handcar Regatta, but told you at least we still had art boats at the Rivertown Revival? Well, apparently we can party on the train tracks after all, just not in the way we’re used to.

Hop aboard the Wine Train and get ready for some tunes because Rock The Rails offers live music, a gorgeous moving view of the Napa Valley vineyards and of course all of the wine your heart desires.

The next Rock The Rails features the fabulous Sheila Cecelia Escovedo, AKA Sheila E.

The Oakland-born singer, actress and author kicked off her career as a drummer and percussionist but soon became known for her talents as a singer-songwriter after meeting beloved music icon Prince backstage after a gig. The pair worked together on a number of tracks including “A Love Bizarre,” a funky duet between the two and “The Glamorous Life,” a song on Sheila E.’s debut album written by Prince.

Brewing art and music

Art and music go hand in hand. Both mediums are forms of expressions which tend to bring people together. With that said, what’s better than grabbing a beer, listening to local music and checking out cool art all while helping out a good cause? Local artists Mae Blackmore, Jason Avery, Jenny Harp, Ruth Alison Donovan and Merisha Lemmer team up with Santa Rosa band Oddjob Ensemble for an art show and music extravaganza at Brew Coffee and Beer House at the end of the month.

Meet creatives in both fields over a cold glass of beer or a hot cup of coffee and pick up custom-made art prints, while checking out installation pieces on creative mediums such as wood, tile and window frames.

Dance along to uniquely crafted sounds featuring sassy accordion notes, catchy drum beats, lively bass notes. Best of all, a portion of the proceeds will benefit The Livingroom, a day center dedicated to serving at-risk women and children, which is located just a few streets over from Brew.
