Free, family-friendly concerts at Festival del Sole

Napa Valley Festival Del Sole, a 10-day classical music festival that begins tonight in the Napa Valley, presents many world-class artists from the top echelons of the opera, ballet and classical music worlds alongside programs that present young musicians, films and other family-friendly fare.

While the regular concerts start at $49, most of the family-?friendly programs are free, although tickets are required to some events. Here are a few of the free events you may want to check out:

A double-feature film screening will take place at 6:30 p.m. Monday, July 20, at 500 First St. in Napa (location of the former Copia center): “Notes on Ice” documents Norway’s Ice Music Festival, in which all the instruments are created from wild ice cut from frozen lakes; and “Drawn,” about rock-climber Jeremy Collins who goes to the ends of the earth to find closure after his friend dies in an avalanche.

The Bouchaine Young Artist Concert presents The Young People’s Chorus of New York City at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, at Jarvis Conservatory in downtown Napa. Free, but tickets are required.

St. Petersburg is the backdrop for “The Glory of Russia, with Renee Fleming and Dmitri Hvorostovsky,” a film screening at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, at 500 First Street in downtown Napa. The famous duo that takes viewers through the palaces of the tsars during a program of Russian and Italian opera music.

Violinist Stephen Waarts, a student at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, returns to the festival at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 22, with a Bouchaine Young Artist Concert at Jarvis Conservatory in downtown Napa. Free, but tickets are required.

The documentary film “Crescendo: The Power of Music,” about three kids in thriving youth orchestras inspired by the Venezuelan El Sistema program, will screen at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 22, at 500 First Street in downtown Napa. Director Jamie Bernstein will answer questions after the screening.

Young pianist HyeJin Kim of South Korea will perform at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 23, at Jarvis Conservatory in downtown Napa as part of the Bouchaine Young Artist Concert series. Free, but ticket required.

The festival’s Community Concert, a children’s program featuring the musical storybook “Angel Heart,” will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, July 26 at the Lincoln Theater in Yountville. The program features an original score by composer Luna Pearl Woolf that weaves in families songs and lullabies by Jake Heggie, Iring Berlin and John Lennon-Paul McCartney. Free, but tickets required.
