Take A Drive: Outside Lands Tips - After 10 years of epic lineups, mouthwatering local food and dozens of hilarious word- of-mouth stories clogging up social media sites, it’s not a surprise that a large portion of Sonoma County folks make the hourlong drive to San Francisco for Outside Lands every year. This year’s Outside Lands festival runs Aug. 11-13 in Golden Gate Park.

For those of you who go, my summer festival survival guide advice still stands: stay hydrated, embrace the fanny pack and lay off the booze - unless you want to risk praying to the hangover gods while your favorite bands take the stage.

For Outside Lands, which has its own specific circumstances, I’d add a few more.

The first is: Keep the floor-length lace maxi-dresses at home and put some pants on because the weather at this festival can skip the hot spells.

I’ll admit the first year I attended, I was one of the many girls sporting chattering teeth and begging to borrow a friend’s jacket.

And although the festival happens during the tail end of summer, the wind blowing in from the bay keeps temperatures lower than Coachella or BottleRock. Trust me, you’ll be glad you brought a jacket once the headliners start.

Second, if you’re driving from the North Bay, remember you still have a long commute once the show is over. I know I’ve already mentioned to lay off the booze, but here’s another idea.

If you’d rather not worry about the drive, and don’t want to pay inflated hotel rates, find a cheap motel just outside of San Francisco and ride BART into the city.

Not only will this let you avoid traffic and driving on treacherous hills but you also won’t have to deal with parking near the festival grounds.

And one last tip for those of you carpooling, remember to set a meet-up spot with your group upon arrival. Save yourself the dilemma of choosing between finding your party at the end of the night or taking fun pictures.

If you pick a spot right off the bat, you’ll know just where to meet regardless of a dead phone battery.

Charging stations are few and far between, and this festival is a prime spot to snap photos.

Stay Local: Psychedelic vibes at Lagunitas - Spending the weekend getting lost in a wave of psychedelic songs, a colorful light show and a sea of swaying bodies sounds great, until you realize you have to drive an hour to San Francisco.

Luckily, Bay Area artists Lee Gallagher and The Hallelujah are making their way to Petaluma for a free show Aug. 17 at the Lagunitas Brewing Co. Taproom.

The Bay Area psychedelic-soul band blends beautifully crafted guitar riffs, old-school rock-and-roll vibes and strong vocals you might find on classic vinyl.

Falling somewhere between the beautiful sounds of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Bob Dylan, and not far behind them in aesthetics, the band brings a new twist to music best known in the late ’60s to ’80s.

Notable tunes to check out include “Touch The Water” and “Empty Stars.”

Stay In: Hose Rips premier - Feel like listening to something new? Local band Hose Rips just premiered two songs from their upcoming debut full-length album.

The words “Punk Rock” and “Experimental” don’t do the band’s tunes justice.

Blending classic punk-rock tunes reminiscent of, say, early Sex Pistols and catchy synthesized tunes, these five Santa Rosa musicians take you on a mystical journey through time, space and maybe someplace in between.

Unhinged and uncut in a way that’s surprisingly pleasant (if the first two songs speak for the group’s record as a whole), it’s one album you’ll want to pick up as soon as it’s out.

Though the record won’t be dropping until Sept. 2, you can listen to both “29” and “Amor” on the Don’t Look Down Records! Band Camp now. soundcloud.com/dont-look-down-records/sets/rose-hips-st-ep
