Guitarists Julian Lage and Bill Frisell to open all-star 2018 Healdsburg Jazz Festival

The 20th annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival will welcome top names like Charles Lloyd, Billy Hart, Julian Lage and more.|

The 20th annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival will be held June 1-10 at various venues in and near Healdsburg.

Jazz guitarists Julian Lage, a Santa Rosa native, and the genre-spanning Bill Frisell will open the festival with a performance at the SHED in Healdsburg.

The festival traditionally includes two days of special shows at the Jackson Theater in Santa Rosa.

Next summer, the Fred Hersch Trio and Trio La Paz, with guests Anat Cohen and Claudia Villela, will perform there June 2, followed by saxophonist and flutist Charles Lloyd on June 3, performing with Zakir Hussain, Gerald Clayton, Eric Harland and others.

Ticket sales will be announced early next year, said Jessica Felix, founder and artistic director of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival.

That’s just a sample of the jazz artists, ranging from big names to local favorites, scheduled to perform at the festival so far.

The rest of the festival, subject to possible additions and changes, includes:

June 5 - John Santos Quintet, Healdsburg Plaza.

June 6 - Cosa Nostra String Trio, plus Adams Theis, at Spoonbar.

June 7 - Marc Cary Trio, Paul Mahder Gallery, Healdsburg.

June 8-9 - Danny Grissett, Lorca Hart and John Heard, Hotel ?Healdsburg lobby.

June 9 - Two shows:

(1) Festival All-Stars with Bobby Watson, Azar Lawrence, Chico Freeman, David Weiss, Billy Hart, Babatunde Lea, George Cables and Essiet Essiet;

(2) George Cables Trio with Essiet Essiet and Victor Lewis; both at the Raven Performing Arts Theater, Healdsburg.

June 10 - Two shows:

(1) “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” with the Marcus Shelby Band, the 100-voice Freedom Jazz Choir and guests ?James Newton and Ruth Naomi Floyd;

(2) Dixie Giants and Russian River Ramblers, with special guests; both at the Raven.
