Journey's End mobile home park closed due to dangerous levels of asbestos after Santa Rosa fire

Due to the amount of asbestos found during testing of the fire-ravaged Journey's End Mobile Home Park by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the city of Santa Rosa has shut down public access.

The direction to the city to red-tag the property came after tests showed a dangerous volume of asbestos dispersed throughout the entire park, said Santa Rosa Assistant Fire Marshal Paul Lowenthal. The park off Mendocino Avenue at Fountain Grove Parkway formerly held about 160 units, only about 20 of which remain, according to city officials.

A meeting about the closure and the EPA's cleanup plan is scheduled for Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Steele Lane Community Center, 415 Steele Lane.

No one will be allowed into the site until the EPA decides its safe for the public to enter. Lowenthal said that is causing concern among the park's former residents, some of whom have not yet been able to sift through the ash for personal belongings.

“They are going to make a plan to segregate out personal belongings that they find from the debris,” Lowenthal said. “They are prepared to take steps to preserve people's things.”
