Hall of Flowers Preview is a barnyard party

Who knew a barnyard could be so beautiful and smell so good?

The Sonoma County Fair's Hall of Flowers this year remakes the old image of a barnyard, usually known for its muck and odors, into a fragrant garden glamorous enough for a party. Wouldn't grandpa be surprised?

'Barnyard Blossoms' is the theme of the Fair's 'Hall of Flowers' this year and fair-goers who don't like the feeling they're being hustled through with the crowds can spend a relaxed couple of hours in the floral fantasyland during the annual Preview Party July 23.

Party-goers can stroll among the lavish and elaborate display gardens, many created by professional designers and landscapers competing for ribbons, all while sipping wine and enjoying small bites.

Each of the gardens has a related farm theme, from Cowabungalow and Horsing Around to Pigsty Paradise and Donkey Diggins, spread out within a huge hall staged with professional props, water features and fountains.

The theme evokes 'strong memories for many people in Sonoma County whose roots are linked to the land,' said Greg Duncan, a professional set and prop designer for theme parks and other entertainment venues who has been in charge of the Hall of Flowers for 20 years.

'While many have moved away from the farm, the memories are a part of who they are. Others are the children and grandchildren of farmers who feel the connection in their blood. This show promises to be a wonderful, sentimental experience.'

The party is from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the evening before the fair, which officially opens July 24 for a 15-day run.

Tickets for the Preview Party are $30. They can be purchased online at SonomaCountyFair.com, at the Fairgrounds Box Office, 1350 Bennett Valley Road in Santa Rosa or at the gate the day of the event.

Proceeds from the party support the Hall of Flowers Scholarship Fun for local agriculture students.
