A grass fire on Monday afternoon burned 21 acres in a remote area near Laytonville before firefighters contained it, Cal Fire said Tuesday.

The blaze, reported around 3:30 p.m., burned near a remote section of Bell Springs/ Milstead Road, starting in the grass and spreading quickly to nearby forest.

Cal Fire, Laytonville Fire and Palo Verde fire responded, sending 11 engines, three crews, and a helicopter among other things. They contained the blaze about two hours later, by 5:38 p.m., said Julie Cooley, a spokesperson for Cal Fire. She added that it was a busy afternoon for Mendocino County firefighters: Cal Fire responded to three other fires within the same hour.

One, near Hopland, burned about a quarter of an acre, and two others in the Willits area burned a total of 3 1/2 acres.

“Luckily, they were easily taken care of when we got the resources on them,” Cooley said.
