Baby hurt when car seat ejected from vehicle in Santa Rosa

Infant ejected and sustained multiple injuries after mother failed to properly install car seat, CHP said.|

An infant was ejected from a car and hurt her head Friday evening after a Santa Rosa mother failed to properly install a child safety seat in a car that belonged to someone else, the CHP said.

Jocelyn Gallardo, 18, of Santa Rosa, also did not properly close the rear left door of the 2001 Mazda she was driving on Santa Rosa Avenue near Castro Court. The door swung open and the car seat, with Gallardo’s 8-month-old girl strapped inside, fell onto the street, according to the CHP.

The infant’s head was scraped and she was transported to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital for treatment. The infant was properly belted inside the safety seat, but the seat was not properly secured, the CHP said. Additionally, Gallardo believed the car door that flew open was stuck shut, the CHP said.

No charges were filed against Gallardo.

The CHP provides free inspections of child safety seats. To schedule an inspection, call 588-1400.
