Mendocino County’s Black fire on Tuesday was 95 percent contained, with Cal Fire officials starting to take firefighters off the blaze so that they could focus their efforts on other fires.

“It’s getting wound up pretty well,” Cal Fire spokeswoman Julie Cooley said.

The fire started Saturday and by Monday night had scorched just over 400 acres and burned five homes, six other structures and three firefighting vehicles.

High heat, sometimes erratic winds and low humidity created challenging conditions for firefighters at times, Cal Fire officials said in a news release. Despite that, they said, they had made “great progress” containing the fire.
