A 78-year-old Petaluma man apparently committed suicide in a city park Saturday morning, according to Petaluma Police.

Witnesses at Steamer Landing Park on Copeland Street told police they had seen a man park his vehicle and put a note on the window. He then placed a tarp on the ground in front of his vehicle, and witnesses said they heard a gunshot.

Officers found the man wrapped in the tarp and determined he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The note on the window said “Call Police.” The park was closed for about two hours while investigators from the police department and coroner’s office conducted an investigation.

The name of the man was not released.
