A 25-year-old Santa Rosa man suspected of breaking into two Rohnert Park businesses was in custody Sunday at the Sonoma County Jail on suspicion of burglary and vandalism, police officials said.

The break-in was discovered Tuesday morning at Breakaway Bikes and the adjacent Kid Cuts on Commerce Boulevard near State Farm Drive. Both businesses had been ransacked, although it wasn’t clear whether anything had been taken, Rohnert Park Police Sgt. Jeff Justice said.

Police suspect William James “Jimmy” Dye fell through a ceiling at the bike shop because of the amount of ceiling debris found on the floor and a cellphone, which was left behind under the mess, Justice said.

Detective Debbie Lamaison linked the cellphone to Dye, Justice said. Lamaison arrested Dye on Friday at Sonoma County Superior Court where Dye was scheduled to appear at a hearing for an unrelated vehicle-theft charge, Justice said. Dye reportedly told Lamaison that he fell through the ceiling while breaking into the businesses to steal money he needed for drugs, Justice said.
