A Lake County man was arrested Sunday for firing a gun multiple times at a group of people after one of them stopped him from assaulting a woman, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

Marcus Ray Gregory, 20, of Lucerne, was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, inflicting injury on a spouse or cohabitant, making terrorist threats, resisting arrest and exhibiting a deadly weapon.

The incident began at about 6:50 p.m. at the Riviera Motel in Lucerne. Witnesses said Gregory was choking and hitting a woman inside of a vehicle parked at the motel, according to sheriff’s officials. After a witness intervened, Gregory retrieved a handgun from inside his motel room, pointed it at the group of people standing outside and threatened to shoot, sheriff’s officials said. Witnesses claimed he also pointed the gun at some children. Gregory fired as the people fled, sheriff’s officials said.

When deputies arrived, Gregory attempted to flee, jumping through a rear window of the motel room and running away. He was treated for a laceration before being booked into the Lake County jail.
