SACRAMENTO — California health officials are warning people not to eat Happy Apple brand caramel apples after they were recalled over concerns they could be contaminated with listeria.

The State Department of Public Health issued the warning on Thursday. Missouri-based Happy Apple Co. announced a day earlier that one of its suppliers reported that there may be a connection between the recent listeria outbreak and the apples it had supplied.

The recall comes after at least three deaths and at least 29 illnesses in 10 states have been linked to an outbreak of the deadly bacteria.

The Food and Drug Administration is continuing to advise consumers not to eat any pre-packed, commercially produced whole caramel apples.
