A Lake County woman was killed Saturday in a head-on collision on Highway 101 near Cloverdale that backed up traffic for several hours, authorities said.

Wanda Shields, 67, of Nice died in the crash that occurred shortly before 9 a.m. north of Geysers Road, the CHP said.

Shields was a passenger in a 1998 Buick driven by Donald Shields, 74. The car was traveling south when it was struck by a 2004 Honda driven by Xaun Zuo, 30, of Kirkland, Wash.

Zuo, who had been traveling north and swerved to avoid an object, lost control of the car and entered into the southbound lanes, striking the Shieldses’ car, the CHP said.

Donald Shields suffered major injuries and was transported by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital. A passenger in Zuo’s car, Jiapeng Lu, 33, also of Kirkland, also suffered major injuries and was taken by ambulance to Ukiah Valley Medical Center.

The CHP said it did not appear alcohol contributed to the crash and that all involved in the crash were wearing seat belts.
