A 16-year-old Santa Rosa boy driving a motorcycle was arrested after he allegedly led authorities on a chase that reached speeds of 100 mph, the CHP said Sunday.

Officer Brian Wood was patrolling Highway 101 near Yolanda Avenue at about 11 a.m. Saturday when he spotted a 2007 Yamaha sport bike traveling north at a high rate of speed, CHP Sgt. David Derczo said.

Wood followed as the Yamaha exited at Third Street in Santa Rosa. A records check revealed the motorcycle’s registration had been stolen, Derczo said.

The motorcyclist circled around to get back on the highway and then sped off onto Highway 12 heading east after Wood activated the emergency lights on his patrol vehicle. The motorcycle reached speeds of 100 mph as the chase headed toward Farmers Lane. Back on Highway 12, the Yamaha blew through several red lights as it eluded the pursuing officer near Mission Boulevard.

Wood traced the motorcycle’s registration to an address in the Skyhawk subdivision off Highway 12. When the officer arrived at the home, he identified the driver of the motorcycle as a 16-year-old boy who was stepping out of the front door.

The boy was arrested on charges of felony evasion, driving without a license and providing false registration. Derczo said the motorcycle was registered to the teen’s mother, who was not home when the boy was arrested. Derczo said the teen allegedly took the registration tag from his mother’s car and put it on the motorcycle.

The teen was booked into Sonoma County Juvenile Hall.
