Whether clad in hats or curled up like cats, students are reading

Mattie Washburn Elementary School in Windsor celebrateD Read Across America Monday with a big nod to Dr. Seuss on his birthday|

The principal wanted to celebrate a very happy day.

A very happy day for a very special man who loved to read and play.

A birthday honor for Dr. Seuss it was, and Principal Benita Jones decreed:

“It is a day for all of us to read.”

Oh, what fun we will have! To her students she swore.

Her Mattie Washburn Elementary School pupils would read about the shore, or about the floor, or even books about Thor.

And read they did.

They read about cats and hats, and cats in hats, and about dogs and pollywogs and maybe even a squishy squid.

To celebrate Monday’s Read Across America, they tried Dr. Seuss’ favorite plate, green eggs and ham. Six hundred eggs they ate, scrambled they were and emerald in hue.

These were not eggs from a box, nor stolen by a fox. These were eggs, perhaps an emu’s.

On this national reading birthday they also marched in a hat parade.

Wear your best bonnet today. Don’t worry, it’s not for a grade.

A huge success it was, Principal Jones said, and that would suffice.

“It makes reading fun,” she said, “and that’s nice.”
