Volunteers sought for Russian River and coast cleanups March 28

Volunteers will be fanning out along the Russian River and at Salmon Creek Beach for a pair of cleanups on March 28.|

Tires. Propane tanks. A TV. A stereo. A tent, submerged and drifting in the rocks.

Those are among the discarded items fished from the water in recent weeks by Russian Riverkeeper volunteer Chris Brokate and several companions for whom clearing the river of trash has become a calling.

Volunteers are needed to help out Saturday, March 28, with a Russian Riverkeeper cleanup aimed at capturing more litter before it heads downstream and to the ocean.

Participants can work on foot or from the water, using their own canoes, kayaks or motorboats, are welcome.

“If 50 people went out and did it, we could make a huge difference,” Brokate said.

Volunteers will meet at 9 a.m. at Johnson’s Beach in Guerneville for instructions. More information is available at russianriverkeeper.com.

The river cleanup coincides with a similar work day March 28 at Salmon Creek Beach from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.. That effort is organized by Sonoma Coast Surfrider and the B-Rad Foundation. More information on that event is available at b-radfoundation.org.
