The Pedroncelli Winery has promoted Montse Reece to winemaker, filling a vacancy left by the death of John Pedroncelli earlier this year.

Reece becomes the third winemaker in the Geyserville winery’s 87-year history, joining vineyard manager Lance Blakeley and cellar master Polo Cano. For the last seven vintages, she worked alongside Pedroncelli, who served in the position from 1948 to 2014.

Reece worked in wineries from the Penedes and Montblanc regions in her native Spain and earned her degree in enology from the Rovira I Virgili University in Tarragona.

She later came to California and joined the harvest crew at Gloria Ferrer Champagne Caves in Sonoma in 1998. She also worked at Ferrari-Carano and Rodney Strong vineyards. She joined the winemaking team at Pedroncelli Winery in 2007.

“We have already begun to see Montse’s fingerprint on the 2014 vintage and it gives us great comfort to know that John’s passions, and ours are in good hands,” Julie Pedroncelli St. John, the winery’s vice president of marketing, said in a statement.
