Driver killed in Bennett Valley crash was Santa Rosa man, 26

A driver who died in a Bennett Valley Road crash this weekend was a 26-year-old Santa Rosa man, reported the CHP Sunday.

Speed and alcohol contributed to the 2:50 a.m. Saturday crash, said CHP Sgt. Chris Linehan.

Michael Sarmento lost control of his 1999 Dodge Ram pickup as he drove west on the rural road just east of Carrithers Road, Linehan said.

The truck veered across the two lanes, spun clockwise and smashed into a massive oak tree, Linehan said.

The truck struck the tree on the driver's side.

The driver, who apparently was wearing a seat belt, died in the crash.

His passenger, Michael Dibernardo, 25, of Rohnert Park, walked away from the crash with minor injuries. He had worn a seat belt, Linehan said.
