A Petaluma cyclist injured on a steep, picturesque coastal route when he crashed into an oncoming motorcycle was in fair condition Monday, Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital officials said.

William Mitchell, 34, of Petaluma suffered major injuries in the collision on King Ridge Road at Tin Barn Road just before 2:20 p.m. Sunday, the CHP said.

While riding through a curve, Mitchell “failed to stay to the right side of the road as required” and crashed into a motorcycle ridden by John Mardesich, 48, of San Rafael, according to the CHP.

Mitchell, who the CHP said had been riding in a group, was airlifted to Memorial Hospital.

Mardesich was uninjured, the CHP said.
