Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies Monday were investigating a report of smashed windows and missing wallets from vehicles parked at the Wells Fargo Center.

At least nine vehicles belonging to a group of friends who had parked at the center in the morning had broken windows when the group returned at about 2:15 p.m. from a 62-mile bike ride, Lee Hill of Petaluma said. Several wallets, bags and a phone were missing, she said.

A center employee alerted the Sheriff’s Office at 12:13 p.m. after observing several vehicles with broken windows, Lt. Al Vernon said. Deputies were investigating the break-ins, he said.

The vehicles were parked on the eastern side of the center, Hill said.

One rider received a phone call from her credit card company’s fraud department during the ride alerting her to a suspicious charge in San Pablo, Hill said.

“It was such a beautiful day that had a sad ending,” Hill said.
