Autopsies pending for Clearlake Oaks couple killed in weekend shooting

Lake County sheriff’s officials have not determined who was the victim and who was the shooter in an apparent murder-suicide over the weekend involving a Clearlake Oaks couple.

The bodies of Laura Ann Matthews, 58, and Carl Garnett McHughes Jr., 53, were found inside their home Saturday, officials said.

Autopsies began Wednesday but had not been completed as of late afternoon, sheriff’s Lt. Steve Brooks said.

Both Matthews and McHughes had suffered gunshot wounds. A firearm was recovered at the scene, officials said.

Brooks said a motive for the shooting has not been determined. There were no reports of prior domestic violence incidents at the home, he said.

No additional information was available Wednesday.
