Two men were arrested for suspected drunken driving after a head-on collision in Mendocino County that left both drivers with major injuries late Saturday night, according to the CHP.

The men were traveling in opposite directions on Highway 128 just east of Philo when a 1999 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Stephen Hunter of Ukiah crossed into the oncoming lane, the CHP said. Hunter’s eastbound sedan collided with a westbound 1998 Subaru Impreza driven by an Oregon man named Colter Millehrer, the CHP said.

The high-impact crash trapped both Hunter, 36, and Millehrer, 26, of Corvallis, in the wreckage of their cars, and firefighters had to cut them free, the CHP said.

Hunter was flown by medical helicopter to Enloe Medical Center in Chico, where he was listed in fair condition Sunday, a nursing supervisor said.

Millehrer was taken by ground ambulance to Ukiah Valley Medical Center. No update on his condition was available.

Both were arrested for suspected drunken driving and released to the care of medical personnel, the CHP said.
