AVALON — The head of a conservation organization was gored as he took photos of a bison on California's Santa Catalina Island.

The Orange County Register reports (http://bit.ly/1hgOY6h ) that 43-year-old Chris Baker was airlifted to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Wednesday after the attack near the Two Harbors area.

His mother says he was taking photos of the animal when it attacked. He suffered a punctured lung and was in surgery Wednesday evening.

Baker is CEO and president of the American Conservation Experience, which works with the Catalina Island Conservancy on trail projects.

About 300 bison live on the island. The bison are descendants of 14 animals that were shipped to the island in 1924 to make a Western film.
