Six people were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving during an overnight traffic checkpoint in Santa Rosa, police said Saturday.

Police screened 1,279 drivers at the checkpoint, located on Highway 12 near Brush Creek Road from 7 p.m. Friday to 3 a.m. Saturday. In addition to the six who were arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, police also arrested one person on suspicion of drug possession and transportation. Two others were arrested for outstanding warrants.

Eighteen were cited or arrested for driving without a license, or driving while their license had been suspended or revoked. Three were ticketed for violations of the vehicle code.

Police cited traffic checkpoints as important tools for reducing the number of people who are injured or killed by motorists driving under the influence.
