A 20-year-old man was stabbed multiple times during a fight early Saturday in downtown Petaluma, police said.

Officers were dispatched at 2:06 a.m. in the aftermath of the fight at Water Street near Main Street, according to the Petaluma Police Department.

The victim had been stabbed many times in his chest near the waterfront and was able to walk to Petaluma Boulevard North, where he collapsed across the street from the downtown Starbucks, police said.

He was transported to a hospital and was expected to survive, police said.

Prior to the fight, the victim was with two friends along the waterfront. The three then became involved in a fight with two other men, one of whom was the attacker, police said.

The victim’s friends later were found near the Taco Bell on East Washington Street on a separate disturbance call, police said. Officers questioned them but they did not provide any details. One of the men said he did not want to be a snitch, police said.

The suspect is described as a white man between the ages of 25 and 35, 5 feet 9 inches tall, and weighing about 145 pounds. He had a goatee and long sideburns and wore a black beanie knit cap, a black jacket and blue jeans.

The knife has not been found.

The Petaluma Police Department requests anyone with information on the case call 778-4372.
