A 57-year-old man severely injured Tuesday evening when hit by a car while crossing a busy Petaluma intersection has been identified as a Stanislaus County resident.

Jose Alves, of Turlock, was crossing Washington Street at Keller Street in a lighted crosswalk at 5:44 p.m. when was hit by a westbound Subaru Forester and thrown 70 feet, police said. Alves was in critical but stable condition Wednesday at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Petaluma Police Sgt. Ron Klein said Alves, a semitruck driver making a delivery to Petaluma Creamery, had activated the crosswalk lights at the intersection and was crossing south Washington Street to a Westamerica Bank ATM when a car in one of the westbound lanes did not stop.

Alves turned to yell at that car, and as he walked backward, he was struck by the Subaru driver, Judie Zura, 42, of Cotati, Klein said.

The four-way intersection includes stop signs on Keller Street but no controls for Washington Street traffic besides crosswalk lights embedded in the pavement.

Klein said the crash is still under investigation. Alcohol did not appear to be a factor, Klein said.

Anyone who witnessed the collision is asked to call Officer Mario Giomi at 707- 776-3722.
