Police: Out-of-control SUV plows into Petaluma house

Police said a 21-year-old Petaluma man was driving too fast on wet roads when he began turning, causing the SUV to crash into a house.|

A 21-year-old driver crashed into a Petaluma house Friday morning after apparently losing control of a Chevrolet Blazer on a rain-slick road while turning onto South McDowell Boulevard, Petaluma police said.

The SUV plowed through a large window on the first floor of the Maria Drive home about 11:30 a.m., coming to a stop about three-quarters of the way through a wall into a family room, Petaluma police officials said.

The driver, Gregory Winters of Petaluma, was uninjured and got out of the vehicle through the rear hatch window, Petaluma Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Holden said.

Two people were home at the time of the crash. They were on the second floor on the other side of the house and were uninjured, Holden said.

Officer John Silva said it appears Winters was traveling too fast when he began turning left from Maria Drive onto South McDowell Boulevard, then over corrected and lost control. It was raining, and slick road conditions may have contributed to the crash, he said.

Holden said firefighters shored up the damaged wall with four-by-fours and the house was stable and habitable.
