A 32-year old man was arrested Thursday when he tried to recover his car from the CHP, which impounded the vehicle more than a month ago after finding it abandoned following a pursuit through Santa Rosa.

On Nov. 13, a CHP officer patrolling northbound highway 101 near Todd Road said he saw an Audi SUV speeding while weaving in and out of traffic. The officer twice tried to stop the car, both on and off the freeway, but it escaped and the officer eventually lost track of the suspect, the CHP said.

After other CHP and Santa Rosa police officers joined the search, the Audi was found in the Coffey Park neighborhood. At the time, officers were unable to find the driver, who they identified as Lance Evans of Forestville, while processing the car for impound. They completed a report recommending charges against him, the CHP said.

Police said Evans called the CHP’s Santa Rosa area office Thursday trying to get the Audi out of impound and was told he had to come to the office in person and show valid identification. After he arrived about 4:40 p.m., he was arrested on suspicion of reckless evasion and violation of probation, the CHP said.
